On September 10th, the streets of Sydney turned rainbow, the word ‘Yes’ echoing through the city. Over 30,000 people turned up in a show of support for the LGBTQ community, ready to throw a big YES in the direction of the postal vote, conducted by the Australian government. The plebiscite aims to survey the Australian people and confirm that everyone’s on board with people in love putting that love into a legally binding commitment.
Australia has become a host to rally after rally in support of the cause. Sydney’s Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, is herself a member of the LGBTQ community and thus, Sydney has been adorned with Vote Yes flags throughout. Even the infamous Coca Cola sign has taken a side.
The outcome of the postal vote should influence the future of Same Sex Marriage in Australia and if these outpourings of love and support for Yes are any indication, Australia is ready for the change.
The next Vote Yes Rally in Sydney is on October 21st. If you are interested in attending, all information can be found at the Community Action Against Homophobia Facebook Page
